McLaren will sell its headquarters, but has no plans to move

McLaren Group is set to put its Woking headquarters up for sale. However, the brand will not look for a new site - after the sale, the company will remain at its base, but as a tenant.

The supercar maker will have to find a buyer who will pay at least £200 million for the property. Under the terms of the deal, McLaren will continue to operate in Woking and sign a lease with the new owner. According to the brand's forecasts, the headquarters will be sold by the end of the current financial year.

In May, it became known that McLaren was on the verge of bankruptcy due to the coronavirus pandemic: revenues fell sharply due to falling car sales and the cancellation of racing competitions. The company approached the British government for financial support, but was refused. The authorities pointed out that the brand did not take all necessary measures to resolve the problems on its own. McLaren had to cut 1,200 jobs - almost a third of its workforce across both road and Formula 1 car production - and take out a £150 million loan from the National Bank of Bahrain.

The Woking headquarters were designed by architect Norman Foster. There are three low-rise buildings on the site, effectively integrated into the landscape: the McLaren Technology Centre, which received a BCI award from the British construction industry, the Production Centre, where road models are assembled, and the Thought Leadership Centre. McLaren has been the permanent owner of the headquarters since its construction in 2004.
