Updated Tesla Model S and X no longer have lead-acid batteries

The updated Tesla Model S and Model X received new 12-volt batteries based on lithium-ion batteries instead of the old lead-acid ones. Elon Musk spoke about this in an interview with automotive expert Sandy Munro. These batteries power the vehicle's non-essential electronics, such as the headlights and taillights.

In conventional gasoline cars, lead-acid batteries are also used to start the engine. They are distinguished by their low price and high starting current. When designing electric vehicles, Tesla decided to use them for 12-volt electronics. Thanks to this, in the event of a failure of the traction battery, the machine still retains some of its functions. At a minimum, the hazard warning lights will work.

However, lead-acid batteries have one significant drawback. Even with a small discharge, they begin to degrade very quickly. In gasoline cars, after starting the engine, the battery begins to charge immediately and does not remain in a half-discharged state. However, Tesla engineers were unable to recreate the same conditions for 12-volt batteries, and therefore they have to be changed almost every two years.

New lithium-ion 12-volt batteries promise to be much more durable, more compact, lighter, but also significantly more expensive. It is expected that other Tesla models will soon be transferred to them.
