In Switzerland, the safety of the old Fiat and the new BMW was compared

Swiss experts from the Dynamic Test Center decided to check how safe the rear space of the police modification of the BMW 525 station wagon is. To do this, they sent an old Fiat Uno into a parked car at full speed.

For testing, three dummies were placed in the back seat of the BMW, which were fastened with seat belts. In addition, the trunk of the station wagon was filled to capacity to see how severe the damage would be. The experts chose the 1983 Fiat Uno subcompact as a “ram” to simultaneously show how car safety systems have changed decades later.

The Italian hatchback was accelerated to 90 km/h, after which the 37-year-old car crashed into a standing German station wagon at full speed. As a result of the powerful impact, the entire front part of the Fiat literally folded into an accordion. All the front windows of the car were smashed, along with the door pillars. If there were passengers in the car at the time of the impact, the likelihood of death would be extremely high.

In the case of the BMW, despite the serious impact, the rear bumper of the model took all the damage. The rear window of the station wagon was only cracked, but all the dummies and equipment located in the trunk were intact. The test once again clearly demonstrated how car safety systems have changed over the past 30 years.

Let us remind you that in early May, the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted crash tests of the new generation Jeep Wrangler. As a result of the tests, it turned out that the SUV is not able to stand on four wheels in a collision with a partial overlap. During the tests, the car overturned twice.
